5.56/.223 function in a Grendel Mag?

Out of curiosity I loaded some 5.56 rounds into a Grendel mag. Fit and hand function was fine.

Has anyone ever used their Grendel mag in a 5.56 weapon?

If it works, it sure makes hoarding Grendel mags a lot more attractive!

In a few words, No, they don't work feeding .223/5.56.

i never tried that , but at one point when buying mags for my ar-10's i accidently purchased 2x 10rd ar-15 5,56 pmag's mags instead of the ar10 pmag's mags , and they will hold 6 grendel rounds and function just fine in the grendel , the downside is the pmags dont allow 2.260 oal its more like 2.220 iirc so i use them for my 90g tnt loads which are loaded to a 2.195 oal , and i keep them around for my 5.56 as well

I know you can stuff a few Grendel rounds into a 5.56 mag and it usually works. And you can stuff a few 7.62x39 grendel sized (i.e. not fireformed yet, so still 7.62x39 tapered), into a Grendel mag, and runs fine. So I guess you could try it and it might or might not work. There's a difference between a few rounds, and fully loaded, and I don't imagine fully loaded will work. Biggest challenge will be the feed lips are spread a bit farther, so they might try to pop out, not sure. Obvioulsy not for serious usage, but for in-a-pinch; there's a decent shot it might work for 5 rounds or so.

I've got one Grendel that will not function properly with a 5.56 mag. I can't say that's the case with a couple other ones I have, because I really haven't checked. I've not checked my AR-15s with Grendel mags but I will next time I have it out.

Winner! I'm gonna try it this weekend with a 10 and 17. They feed OK by hand in a 5.56 rifle. I haven't tried the AK looking 26 round curvy ones.

Which mags did you try it with?

                    OK. So....

I tried this with a 17 round Alexander Arms mag.

                    Loaded it with 5.56

Works fine. Except... I wouldn't trust it.

Some of the rounds end up not "captured" at the top of the mag. They just sit there "loose" waiting to be picked up by the bolt. Which it does, but.. it's kinda like a semi-auto single load scenario. Probably not reliable anywhere but on a bench.
