Out to 1000yds with the 20" odin works

    IMG_06.jpgIMG_07.jpgIMG_10.jpg

It was time to stretch it out and see what it could do, I had joined a shooting range that had a 1000yd range and it was there that I went next. There were a couple of folks already shooting when I got there they were very welcoming and when I told them this was my first time shooting to 1000yds they were a lot of help. The first thing I found out about my setup was I did not have enough adjustment in my elevation to get me to 1000yds just over 800yds was my max. The second thing I found out was the wind can mess you up lol. With help from the other shooters spotting for me I found the holdover to get me to the 1000yd target and also for the wind which was gusting to 10mph left to right and I was able to make some hits on the target. All in all it was a good day and I learnt a lot about distance shooting and reading the wind.

Sounds like all your hard work and spent cash paid off, Brian. Congratulations. Oh, and regarding the March scope...I hate you. ; )

Looks like you had pretty nice weather for shooting!

Looks real good! Gives me some confidence in the one that I just finished putting together today! It has the Odin works barrel and other parts just as you have. I put mine on an Anderson Upper and lower. The upper needed some squaring up unlike yours though.

Thanks for the kind words, Just like you i was flying blind as this was my first foray in 6.5 Grendel land. I looked at other Barrels but their seemed quite a wait for them and questionable CS if things were not right and more wait time so i decided to go with the Odin 20" Barrel and it came with the BCG and gas block, I did upgrade to an adjustable gas block but in all honestly their was no need to.

Nice rifle and great results from that Odin barrel. I went back and forth between Odin and BA on my recent build (original plan was to use Criterion but that's another story...). I had read reviews of the Odin barrel that were almost too good to be true. Ultimately I chose the BA, having had good experiences with them in the past. My first outing with it wasn't nearly as successful as yours though. I only hope that given some time, it'll come around. Anyway thanks for sharing your build and your results.

As I drove home I realized there were a few things I needed, A 20MOA mount
Congrats on getting hits at a grand.

I had the exact same issue of running out of scope my first time at 1000 yards. The instructor highly recommended a Warne mount, which is what I went with. It's very similar to the Burris PEPR mount I was using, but of course has 20 MOA of elevation adjustment built in. You can easily see how the scope is pointing "downhill" when mounted. I'm using a Vortex Viper HS-T 6-24x50, and it already had an extended elevation reticle, but I ran out of zero adjustment at around 850 yards, and ran out of holdover at 1125 yards. Get yourself a 20 MOA mount and you should be able to hit as far as 1175 or so, when you go subsonic. That's where my velocity drops below sonic on my loads. It's pretty outrageous, drop at that range is over 50 MOA.

Great thread. I love long distance shooting. Currently I only have 700 yards to shoot at home. I'm working one clearing out some timber in a fence Rod so I can go diagonal well beyond a 1000.

How big is the plate you were shooting on the 1000 yard range? I wish I knew someone close to me that knew everything about long distance shooting that I could learn from. For me it's a lot of error and some trial.

I believe the plate is 2'x2' but i will check it next time out. I agree with you about trial and error that is how i am learning about long distance shooting with a lot of reading on a few forums, I am still making mistakes and buying the wrong things to help me lol but it has been interesting and fun. I am not an expert but if i can answer any questions for you i will, you can pm or ask in this forum and i will do my best to help you.
