    JP 6.5s

Hey, I'm new here and a little overwhelmed with building my own rifle so I was looking at either the JP CTR-02 or LRP-07. They are priced at about $2400 and $3300 respectively. Am I making a mistake buying a complete rifle like this, in that, could I build something much better myself for these prices?

I was also looking at the Enterprise mod 1 6.5 from Precision Firearms, are there any other companies I should consider?

Welcome, I'm new around here to but I can tell you there are some knowledgeable folks on this site. I'm sure one of them will be able to comment on the quality of the companies you mentioned, I have read many good comments on this site for those two companies. I just wanted to say don't be overwhelmed with building your own. It takes one or two specialized tools but with the cost of those tools and parts you will/can still come in way cheaper than those prices and have the ability to say you put it together. A positive side affect to this is that you will have the tools and the knowledge of how everything goes together which means if you want to change something, you can just change it. The only negative side affect is once you assemble the whole gun you want to start another one!!! At least that's been my experience and what brought me to this site. I have built a couple ARs and want to build another this time chambered in Grendel, so I came here to learn all I could about the caliber and while I have learned lots about the caliber, I have also picked up a few points for my next build.

The JP LRP is a large frame AR so 6.5 Creedmoor, .308, .260, etc. the CTR 02 is the small frame designed for the 6.5 Grendel, .223, 300 Blackout, etc.

If you research JP rifles they are considered to be amongst the best made - I just ordered a SCR 11 in 6.5 G.

If you put an AR together that is at the same level of quality as a JP you will end up spending that much money. When I finally sat down and totaled up what I had spent putting my rifle together I hit $3000.00 with the scope. I bought a Lilja barrel and since I wanted a fluted barrel that was $600.00 just for the barrel. There is a lot to be said for building one yourself but it isn't going to save you any money unless you use cheap components. Precision Firearms makes very accurate uppers with quality parts that will be less than an entire JP. If you do build it yourself my advice is to put your money into a good barrel and start with a square receiver and that will go a long ways to accuracy.

Only you can decide if its worth spending the money to buy a rifle rather then build your own.

If you are going to build your own you probably wont save much money if you use the top of the line products made by JP,PF,AA, but it will give you a since of pride of building your own and will better serve you when it comes time to tear it down for whatever reason.

My main reason I built my own upper was so I could have the pride of doing my own and so I could choose each and every part I wanted to use in the build, so I purchased the best parts I could source from PF,JP.

All that said either way you go you will end up with a very fine and accurate rifle.

          Hope this info helps sir.

            Hi Collateral,

Putting one together is a lot easier than you might think. With sites like this and Youtube it's all modular and straight forward. You will be able to build as good a rifle as JP for slightly less. Joseph5 makes a good point about focussing on a quality barrel as the heart of an accurate rifle but his final price includes a scope and mount which JP does not include in the price.

With building you get to choose exactly what you want down to the very last detail, and you don't need a lot of specialised tools for the job. A sturdy vise, pin drivers, small hammer, grease and Loktite. Plus the usual things like screwdrivers that you already have in the garage. You will need a couple of specialised tools for the job; a barrel extension torque tool (currently on special at Brownells for $45), and a barrel vise ($60), or equivalent like a pair of barrel vise jaws to hold the barrel firmly. Depending on what handguard and back end you want you might also need an AR15 Armourers wrench. Those are the basics and will get you a finished gun.

A quality barrel, trigger and scope. These are the most important parts, and a nice, square upper doesn't hurt either. Everything else just holds it together.
