300 yard testing with my new grendel

I have a little over 350 rounds on my new Grendel so I thought it was time to see what it would do at 300 yards. I set it up on a portable table on sand bags and shot 5 rounds out of a clean cold bore, the first four went .924 in. and the last shot opened it up to 1.55 in. which I am very happy with but I have noticed the Grendel is very affected by wind drift compared to my other rifles.finished ar 005 (768x1024).jpgfinished ar 004 (1024x768).jpg

What kind of winds were you shooting in?

We need more info as to what the other rifles are. Ballistics calculator says you should have about 4" of windage drift at 300 yds with that wind at sea level, or a little over 1 moa. I made some assumptions on your bullet BC and velocity.

The 95gr vmax doesn't have the highest of BC's. Try a 120ish grain bullet. Very nice group, btw.

Very nice. That shows promising accuracy potential for sure. The 95gr VMAX will get moved by the wind soup more because it has a lower BC.

Watching a lot of bullets through the spotting scope throughout the year, for the past 22 years, the 123gr AMAX flies very much like a 175gr SMK.

The 123gr SMK and 123gr Scenar fly with less wind drift than the 175gr SMK or 178gr AMAX. The Litz BC's are more accurate than manufacturers'.

The 120gr Scenar-L is also a very good bullet that bucks the wind better than the 123gr AMAX. I noticed the difference down at North Springs 2 weeks ago.

yes , that wind drift sounds abut right for what I am seeing. I am use to shooting a 220 swift and a 25-06, I am at 800 ft. above see level.

Thanks for that info, I still am playing with different loads.

My bad. I didn't notice you showed the bullet on the target picture.

Those have a lot more speed to work with and though those calibers are not known for high BC inside 300 yards enough speed will trump BC on the wind drift.

That group is under half MOA. .483 moa.

                    That's a very good group.....

Thanks, that will be my varmint load and I am working on a hog load and so far the barnes ttsx and the nosler bal tip in 100 gr. also shoots under 1 moa as I haven't had much success with heavier bullets except the 120 smk which I am not sure would be good for hunting.
