  • Suggestions for ammo recipe

I have both Nosler 120 gr ballistic tip but a friend gave me 300 Winchester 85 gr HPs. I have h335 and 4895 rifle powders. All cases primed with Magnum SRPs.

Anyone cooking with similar components? If so I'd love to know the recipes.

    Thanks

I too have purchased some 85gr pills but have only bought cfe 223 and cci 450's currently, surely some folks have used some of those small varmint type stuff around here. : )

I found the load data on the Hodgdon web site. I'm going to buy the cfe223 for my .223 and my 6.5 but I needed to load something tonight to try the rifle out tomorrow. This is what I used:

      29 grains of H335
      85 gr HP
      CCI 450 magnum SRP
      2.240" COL

I made up a few and I'll try them out. If they're nice I'll run a couple hundred to exhaust my H335 and try and find some cfe 223.

      Cheers.

WoW!! 2.240" coal with a 85g pill? That is barely seated in the neck of the case.

The 85 gr had a longer col than the 120 and the 90. What do you suggest? Ill mic the depth in the morning.

          Hodgdon's website had 85gr 2.24", 90 gr at 2.20", 95 gr at 2.230", 107 at 2.250", 120 at 2.20" and 123 at 2.250".

Seat it into the neck until you are convinced the neck will support the bullet as it gets slammed into the feedramp and then chambers.

Most likely it will have a lot of stand off from the front of the magazine which can make things difficult with the poor quality of Grendel magazines taken into account.

Best bet is trial and error using a dummy round.

ok--so the recipe is for a sierra 85gr HP and I have Winchester but I have to imagine the bullet length is the same. I cannot find the length of the bullet but only the sectional density and ballistic coefficient so I'm a bit blind here.

The length of the Winchester pill is .855", which means at 2.240" it is seated .13" deep (an eighth) which is the depth of the neck from rim to the top of shoulder. I seated one to 2.1" which is noticeably deep or into the cartridge 1/4". I can pull it no problem and I'm also shooting the minimum load. Not sure what to do because I can't find the length of the sierra bullet.

ok--made a dummy round and 2.240" as expected bullet just popped out. Made one at 2.10" and it cycled quite a number of times and the bullet got loose. I may just take the 20 rounds apart and chalk it up to a bad buy.
