  • case mouth too small

Alright, I have the hornady custom die set. I full-length sized 40 cases and when I sat the first bullet, using the seating die, the case peeled some cooper off the bullet. I measured the mouth of the cases and got 0.258, after being full-sized. Had any of you had this problem? The sizing die has an elliptical expander inside, I'm not sure if it could be adjusted.

Do you chamfer the inner case mouth? With a tool such as this:

No, but if you think it will make a difference I'll go get one.

Yes, it should make a difference.

There are various types, for both inside and outside of the case mouth. I use ones that work with a cordless drill, to chamfer and debur after cases have been trimmed.

juke-- the inside frontal Burr, on the neck.- when removed from the chamfering step- will get you an I.D. of .260-.261. = Same as my Forster dies. You could try a VLD style chamfer tool also. Google some data for your research. Always strive to be learning something new.

You shouldn't need to chamfer the case mouth if you don't trim the case.

True, Al,, but on New cases-always chamfer the burr out. It's always there..

I also use the RCBS chamfering deburring tool, but haven't seen the 22 degree VLD tool. My bench is away from me now, so I'm not sure what the normal ID of a case mouth is, but is .258 kinda small for this case?
