    Case Trim length

Here is post by BFT <http://www.65grendel.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=4646&d=1392825490>. The main thing is to keep all cases in batch the same length. Easier to crimp, seat bullets, etc. Saami gives a tolerance of -0.020". That gives a minimum case length of 1.500, most sources that I have read say to trim to 1.510. Other posters might have different suggestions. To be honest I do not overwork my brass so I tend to be conservative in my trimming. Brass last longer that way.

The saami max case length is 1.520. Standard practice is to subtract .010 as your trim to length. The nosler online data includes a cartridge diagram with each caliber.

Are you 100% on this? Reason why I ask is my Lee grendel trimmer setup only trims them back too 1.520.

Haven't had a problem with the case neck hiting lands yet but I trim every loading, just to keep a solid routine and keep everything the same.

Yes, Saami max is 1.520. The normal "trim to" is 1.510. Most (haven't examined all of them !! lol) hornady etc new or loaded ammo-brass that I have seem to start life at 1.509.

You might want to try another or contact Lee. I have two Lee trimmers for grendel that ive used for a few years and one cuts to 1.510 and the other 1.512

I have never trimmed Lapua or Hornady cases, not even after firing, because I don't get anywhere near the 1.530" chamber length to the mouth.

The only time I've seen brass exceed that is with a few pieces out of many PPU factory loads, and that brass was way soft.

I might see 1.526" max with Hornady and Lapua.

The chamber pressure just isn't there to grow the cases.

For new brass, I just load and shoot.

This was my 17.6" before I put the LaRue MBT-2S in it, 10rds at 100yds, with a standard trigger that didn't have consistent let-off, rapid-fired on a cadence.

                    1000yds 6rd group rapid:

My brass comes out looking new from the unsuppressed guns with this load.

Whereas with my .260 Rem and when I loaded for .308 Winchester, it seems like I had to trim all the time.

If you feel like you need to uniform your brass out of habit, I would try to keep as much neck length contact as possible and trim to that length if you can. I'm not a big fan of cutting neck length contact with the projectile if I don't have to, especially in a magazine-fed gas gun.

My Starline and lapua haven't grown long enough that it will trim them.

But hornady loaded ammo after on fireing, it will trim them and they all come out at 1.520. Well some if have seen 1.519 But mostly 1.520.

Even though the Starline and lapua haven't grown long enough for the trimmer to do anything yet I still run them over it just to keep the routine the same.
