      Where's Bill Alexander?

He's the father and I think this answer is in here somewhere.

When we get the official story, I think that should be put on the Forum home/entry page, or at least a link at the top.

Both of you should do some Norse/Viking legend reading.

The .50 Beowulf, with 400gr bullets, truly is the Hammer of Thor! On the shoulder end too, mine is anyway.

Seems like an English fellow by the name of Geoffery Chaucer(sp?) wrote about Beowulf in the 1500-1600s. As I recall the Grendel was the creature in Beowulf. It has been 40+ years since HS freshman English though, so memory could be a little off.

              Correction
Chaucer wasn't born when Beowulf was written, he came along much later...sorry

Grendel was a mythical creature that attacked king hrothgars mead hall on a regular. Beowulf was the baddest mo fo in the territory and promised to rid the king of his troubles. The end

I was forced to read it for school. It's a great story. https://www.gutenberg.org/files/1632...-h/16328-h.htm

Names come from Bill Alexander, who is British, and who named them after characters in the old English saga Beowulf. He had to come up with product names for his new cartridges and these caught his fancy, so that's what he named them.

Mythical Grendel was unstoppable , until Beowulf found him and whacked him . Maybe 9th century? Lets get Bill back on to state it. Bill/ U still on here ?

Grendel was awesome baddass-, then .50 Beowulf was there to eliminate him. Not possible in todays shooting for long ranges. Bill rocks.

If I recall correctly, at first there was some thought given to naming the cartridge and the only rifle shooting it differently. One was the 6.5 Grendel the other was 264 Grendel. (I dont recall which was which). That got confusing quick so just one name was selected . Again if I recall correctly the Norse monster theme was chosen to make the rifle and cartridge stand out. And the Norse monster theme had been chosen because a few years earlier, a different cartridge/rifle with a Central Asian (? Ganges) meme generated some commercial interest. Oh.. in Grendels early days beer was frequently mentioned; now it's mead. You could look up mead and its tradition in Norse mythology..
