    Split Wolf Steel Cases

Dont have the lot number handy but has anybody had any split cases.

Picking up my brass after shooting well steel, I was shocked to find two split cases down the side of the case and one split at the case mouth. Not that concerned about case mouth as I have seen this before with brass.

But down the entire case is concerning.

I will post pics when i figure out how.

Very common, I’ve found numerous split cases along the body of Steel Wolf 6.5 Grendel cases.

Odd. Second and now third person to say as much. Granted I have not examined my expended steel cases beyond picking them up, but that I know of, not one split case from my Moscow Match in 700 rounds out of 2 ARs and 1 Howa.

Just the other day, I too had a Wolf steel case split--Boom,Boom, pew! several rounds no issue then the weird sound with no ejection. Shot some more with a different rifle (not Grendel) then went home to use a cleaning rod to get out the case. Thankfully the bullet was not in the barrel. Cleaned the rifle and could see no damage. Scared me tho!

I have only fired a couple dozen Wolf steel cased Grendel rounds. It was only a fluke that I retrieved the brass and inspected it. That day I fired about 13 rounds and you can see the pic of what I found. The ammo fired and cycled fine. But I decided it was not the ammo (or bullet for that matter) for my target grade barrel.

I have found several cases split just like that, wondered if the barrel extension was scratching and damaging the cases on the way in. I typically don't closely inspect the steel case stuff after it is ejected because that is why I do it, not to have to look for it.

I don’t have any proof but the steel cases appear to use very soft steel. I don’t know if the high temperatures during firing helps weaken the case and the split cases occur from striking the receiver during the ejection cycle or from the heating and cooling. I’ve experienced split steel cased Wolf ammo from every rifle I’ve shot Wolf/Branual 6.5 Grendel ammo. I’ve inspected my 6.5 Grendels after firing Wolf and can’t see any damage. Wolf steel cased ammo is cheap and doesn’t produce consistent accuracy in my AR-15’s. I have several hundred Wolf steel case on hand but have only shot it at close range targets.

I only noticed after picking them up. But then I remembered I had a odd few shots that produced smoke near my face. No unusual sounds and same recoil and I think all shots on target. From 50 yds to 200.
