Reloading on Dillon 550

I reload 28.4 grains of IMR8208XBR with 123 AMAX and 7 1/2 rem small rifle BR primers and Hornady brass. My Dillon 550B powder drop stays +-0.1 grain. You will be warned by some members that this is a dangerous load so be careful working up to it.
This is the only load I shoot in my Grendel. I have loaded several thousand of them without any pressure signs.Never walk away from home ahead of your axe and sword. You can't feel a battle in your bones or foresee a fight. -The Havamal

Dillon 550 w/Redding dies for rifle and Dillon dies for pistol. I did just buy a Redding micrometer seating die for my .45 ACP and 9mm though.
I have run all those powders on my Dillon. The short cut extruded runs fine along with ball/sphereical powders.
Long grain extruded- sometimes you will hear some powder kernels being crushed as the powder die returns from dropping a powder charge. IMR-4198 comes to mind. But it is not such a big thing that I worry about it.
Dillon does say to try and use ball powder first as it does measure better but temp stability is better with extruded powders, so catch 22 there.Last edited by Jakal; 04-01-2018, 10:10 PM.""Come taste my Shillelagh you goat-eatin bastard!""

Can’t seem to find any Hornady 123 SST ammo, so, going to reload. I have H4895, TAC, Varget powders.
Wondered how they would feed on the Dillon 550, or if there are different powders I should be looking at.
Trying to find IMR8208 as well.
I reload Grendel on an old Dillon 450. Use TAC because it is a ball powder and will meter much better than an extruded through the Dillon measure.
4895 and Varget do not have the bulk density to give you any velocity with a Grendel. Case capacity is too small for the 6.5mm diameter bullet.

Have never used CFE powder.

I know a bunch of guys competing in high power and F Class using Dillon presses. They manually dispense powder charges and drop into the case using this: https://www.dillonprecision.com/at-5...8_4_23632.html

LR55,
I know you have never been a fan of 123 gr pills and 8208. However it was one of the most popular powders on this site for quite awhile.
I think the 6.5 Grendel is a fantastic cartridge, mild but yet effective over a wide range of conditions, and of course the fact it fits into the AR platform is just icing on the cake. One of the things that seems to elude us, is a bullet and a powder that just works in everyones gun. Since I am a High Power competitor, I
If you read thru the early posts you will find that many people used it as a go to powder with 123 AMAX's. My question is: What changed that made it more dangerous? I don't remember reading about any incidents. Did I miss something?Any documentation would probably get me to look for another load. Is there any?

I use CFE223 loading 5.56 loads on my Dillon 650 and it meters fine. I do not push for the hotest/fastest load I can make, since the metering on my press can vary a couple of tenths. Still good enough for my practice loads. When I want match loads the charges are thrown, weighted and loaded on my Forester Co-Ax press.

Guess I am going to have to be choosy on which Powder I go with.
