Why Nobody Loads With H4895 ?

Idk. I've wondered the same thing and recently started playing with it.
1. About the same burn rate as AR Comp(Alliant stated that 4895 was what ARC ended up closest to, although they didn't specify between H or IMR)
2. In the temp-stable "Extreme" line
3. Small kernels fit in the Grendel better than AR Comp
I've noticed that it takes about half a grain more H4895 than AR Comp to get the same velocity in my rifle. Quickload thinks that H4895 should have a slight velocity advantage of ARC with 129's and heavier.

There wasn't much published data for H4895 until Sierra released their Grendel data. Alexander Arms had listed it in their original data.
I loaded some up and saw my best grouping at 27.7 gr going 2489 fps. The same day, 27.8 gr of AR-Comp clocked at 2538 fps, but I've come to think that load was probably over max. These were 123 gr SST's through a 20" barrel.
I think I saw that Klem likes the powder for the Grendel.

While both are owned by the same company, the powders have their differences. In most cases they will be very similar but you will find that there are going to be minor variances in burn rates and temperature sensitivity. While I would not hesitate to use one in place of the other, I would work up my loads, just the same.If it's true that we are here to help others, then what exactly are the others here for?

Both my 4895's are an extruded, (stick) type powders. Very small, and thin.
I just loaded 5 rounds with 120 gr ballistic tips with 27.0 grains of imr. There was enough case space to seat the 120's without crunching powder.
I am chomping at the bit to go see how my reloads are shooting.
Wind is up pretty good here.Last edited by Splatt; 02-26-2018, 12:18 AM.
