New 6.5 Grendel, curious on bullets...need SME advice

Good Evening Everyone, I will try not to bore you. I am new to the 6.5 Grendel. I have been shooting a 6.8 SPC and putting countless Hogs and Deer down with it. But, I wanted to shoot targets out to 1000 and still have a great hunting AR platform, so the 6.5 was how I went. I had a lower that was built by members of the Army Marksmanship Unit for my 6.8 SPC upper, so just needed to put an upper on. I was on a semi-budget and wanted to ensure I had more money in my glass.
Upper is a Radical FireArms! Yes....Radical FireArms 6.5 24" Upper. Lower is from AMU, trigger is RRA two stage match that I put a JP poor man trigger set making it a 3.5 lb trigger. ACE SOCOM stock (didn't like the cheek pad so I have made one) perfect sight picture NOW, some of my groupings will show the issues.

Pictures below.......this Upper is a solid setup and didn't break the bank.

Now that I know the gun is a solid shooter, I am trying to get the most out of my ammo. All shots to date have been Hornady 123 grain A-max. Chrono 2580 fps 7 out of 10 rounds. 1 round at 2610 fps and 2 rounds at 2571 and 2574. I have fired 92 bullets from this upper, and love it. I cannot see the difference from a $1500 upper built by custom builders to this $535 upper.

Has anyone seen a difference between SST and A-MAX 123 gr? The information I have found says both have almost identical bc, but has anyone on this forum really tested the two? Why shoot the AMAX if the SST is a better hunting load and still able to hit 1000 yd targets?

I am going to load myself....any advise on best load data would be great. Thank you

Below are some grouping pics @ 100 Yds.
Red Circle was the 1st group (3 bullets) - poor shooting platform (roof of truck on angle)
Yellow was the 2nd group (3 bullets) - same platform as above
***Got tired of trying to make a stable shooting platform, moved to the ground and shot from the prone......took some time to cut a lane through all the tall grass.***
Blue 3rd group from the prone (4 bullets)

Black target was told it was 300 yards: Bottom two shots = one from turret adjustment, and the other was holding from the H59 reticle U1.3 mils
Adjusted the turret to U1.5 mils and shot three more.........
winds 7 mph full and after shooting the rangefinder, it was 328 yards. Guess the man at the range meant to tell me it was in METERS.

two shots at 8" steel @ 300 yards, I pulled the first alittle left.

Please PM if you would like to have a discussion. Really could use great knowledge from the SME's in the forum.

    Thank you all!

    Suggestion.

Look at the stickies at the top of the Reloading forum.

Before you drop a bunch of money on components, it would benefit you to ask the guys their opinions on what you intend on buying and why.

Yes, not a problem at all.

Welcome and you will soon get overwhelmed with information so once you got something in mind, do ask.

Welcome to the horde, a lot of work went into the Grendel handbooks by some experienced and dedicated guys. Get a copy of those they are very informative for both loads and bullet selection for game.

6.5 Grendel Reloading Handbooks can be found here:

For some high BC (G7 of .284+) bullets in the Grendel look at the Berger 130gr Hybrid and Nosler 130gr Accubond Long Range. There are some threads on those with CFE 223 going now.

I shot Nosler 123 CC and 130 Bergers out to 1200 consistently over CFE out of my PF 24" Bartlein. Sub moa at a 1000 for the Bergers. BTW love the gong stand!

Thank you for the information. I will research the handbooks. Gong is pretty cool, bought the plate and used some items around the garage to hang it. I also got tired of searching for my brass, so I made the below brass catcher. Used Old Arrows that I had left over, put BB's in the bottom triangle to weight it down, hot glued the rest, finished it off with electrical tape, put an old camo mesh net that I have used as cover when painting items, sewed it around the arrows and done!

Welcome aboard. At 300yds, most guns will stack rounds in the same splash zone on painted steel. I've seen some JBM BC figures that were .468 for the 123gr AMAX, and .462 for the 123gr SST. The 129gr SST is .495 G1/.247 G7.

Here are 2 different groups shot by me and my BIL with my little lightweight 16" Grendel I built with an AA barrel/bolt combo. We were at 400yds. I moved onto 600yds after the 2rds on the left since shooting at 400yds with anything in 6.5mm is kinda boring unless the targets are tiny. BIL's group is on the right. He had never shot distance before.

Great Shooting and thanks for the data. I have a box of 129 SST, but not sure if I want to load those or get another box of 123 SST.
What a great place to shoot, your terrain looks awesome!

LRRPF52 is blessed to live in the long range shooters paradise that is Utah. Some great terrain for PRS style matches out that way.
