  • Remington 799 rebarrel for 6.5 grendel

Where can I find more info on doing this? Where can I get a good barrel for the 799 in 6.5 and also does anyone have any feed back for me on doing this like how well theirs shoots or if there is any feeding reliability ect?

    Thanks.

I would do a search on the interwebs, you should be able to find detailed instructions on it. If you are not a gunsmith or a machinist it is not going to be easy. http://garagegunsmithing.com/index.p...php&f=33&t=236 There are some detailed publications available on the subject. Also if your boltface is not for 7.62x39 then you will have to open it up.

Rebarrelling a 799 into a 6.5 Grendel should be straight forward. Most any barrel maker will rebarell a Mini Mauser/Mini MKX/ Charles Daley into the grendel which are the action as the 799. I would look to Wyatts Custem rifles. But as I said, just about any gunsmith or barell maker can do the job. I cant imagine a feeding problem will pop up. Mini mausers have been rebarreled into 22 ppc, 6ppc and 358 gremlin wihtout reported problems.

My 6.5 Grendel is built on a Zastava m85. The manufacturers name for actions sold as Mini Mark X Mausers, Remington 799s or similar.

I started with an action designed for the 7.62x39. Barrel is a PacNor #3 cut to 21inches long.

The only modification that you need to make is to reprofile the magazine follower. Specifically the step in the follower needs to be changed. The forward end of the step (high side) needs to be moved to the left about 2mm. The back end remains the same. Using a file (or a mill) taper the profile between those two measurements.

This change alters the relationship within the magazine box making the Grendel cartridge with it's larger shoulder dia. feed properly.

Oh, and for what it's worth, the Zastava has a barrel thread of 22mm x 1.5mm pitch. It is not the same as the Sako 461 or the CZ 527.

Thanks for all your help and info on this. I am going to start looking around for a barrel. My rifle is the Remington 799 in 7.62x39 so it sounds like I have a good start.

I saw these at SHOT, and was thinking that would be another great candidate for a bolt-gun Grendel. The bolt-gun allows the hand-loader the opportunity to utilize the full potential of the Grendel case's high pressure capabilities, which puts you into lower-end .260 Rem velocities. I think the 130gr and 140gr class bullets are ideal in the bolt-gun Grendel, since my buddy gets some impressive velocities with his 22" CZ527 Grendel, as well as 1/4 MOA accuracy with the 139gr Scenars.

He had CZ's custom shop do the conversion using an air-gauged, select match Douglas barrel. He's really pushing the cartridge with N140 and the 139 Lapua's at 2650-2700fps, which is .260 Territory. If it were me, I would look at the 130gr Berger Hunting/Target VLD's in the bolt Grendel, as well as the gas guns. I'm getting really nice results with the 130gr in my .260 Rem AR10 at around 2800fps, with only 7.4-7.9 Mils of drop at 1000yds, depending on what altitude I'm shooting at. That's only 26-27 MOA. We're really spoiled up here in the high elevations. I shot at 4300 ASL Friday, and 6300 ASL all day Saturday.

Friday was such a beautiful day to shoot on. No wind at all really. I shot a 9.25" group with the .260 Rem at 1000yds, with no windage dialed or held, with my gas gun.

Sounds like a really fun time. I am going this Saturday to a 1000 meter range. I will be shooting some of my .308 rifles I do have one friend that just got a .260 barrel for his ar-10 but has not been able to shoot it yet and does not have any ammo for it yet. I am also currently trying to find a Grendel barrel for an AR-15. I have shot a 24in AR-10 in .308 at the 1000 meter target last time and that was a blast first time shooting anything over 300 yards.

Yes it is EXACTLY the same.

If I hadn't already lashed out for a 6.5 BPC reamer and go/no-go gauges I would have just bought one of these. Not alot of Grendel bits in Australia.

No Grendel in their standard chamberings, but Pac Nor lists a 6.5 Gren Match in their wildcat lineup. Anyone know how that chamber differs?

I had a Pac Nor barrel put on a couple of years ago. They indicated that it was not a trademarked Grendel but...the only diference was in the neck thickness.

Zastava m85 (aka Charles Daly Mini Mauser, Mark X Mini Mauser, Remington 799)
PacNor #3 profile cut to 21inches
6.5 BPC chamber (bolt gun optimised version of Grendel)
B&C stock (40oz of fibreglass - going to buy a Basner soon)
Currently wearing my March 3-24FFP, but will normally have a Kahles 2-7x36.

I designed a bolt knob that is scaled to the action and am waiting for the next batch to be produced.

When I am happy with the performance (and the Fallow rut has passed), it will be Cerakoted all the same colour.
